Caring for your Mattress

When buying a new mattress it is important to look after it properly to prolong its lifespan. Some basic things you may already be aware of are not to jump up and down on the mattress like a trampoline and not to bend the mattress as this can damage its structural integrity.

Turning your mattress once a week from purchase will help the fillings settle into place, after doing this a few times it will only become neccessary to turn the mattress once a month. It is also important to use a breathable mattress protector as non-breathable protectors can cause the mattress to condensate.

It is good practice to regularly use a soft brush to brush down any dust and fluff from the mattress and never use a vacuum cleaner. Stains and spillages should be absorbed using a dry cloth or household paper towel products. Sponging with a damp cloth and mild solution of soap and water may also help lift some stains.

Choosing the Right Mattress

When choosing a new mattress it is important to consider your sleeping needs. If you have back problems it is recommended you get an orthopaedic mattress, as they are designed to provide a firm level of spine and joint support, easing the pain associated with certain back issues.

Most mattresses come in a range of firmness levels, sometimes they are labeled 1 to 5, 1 being the softest and 5 being the firmest. In reality there are far more than 5 firmness levels, and many mattresses considered the same firmness rating may differ in actual firmness. At Sure Sleep we simply label them soft, medium and firm to give you a better idea of the mattress you’ll be getting.

In addition to the firmness level, you may also want to consider the comfort fillings. Cheaper mattresses will feature Polyester fillings, where higher end mattresses may contain cotton, wool and luxurious fibres such as horse hair, cashmere or silk.

Choosing the right spring system can also make a difference, and they usually come in 2 types:

  • Open Coil / Bonnell Spring
  • Pocket Sprung
